PFL Brussels: Joe Schilling furiously quits fight after headbutt foul
Joe Schilling's bout at PFL Brussels ended in one of the most unusual finishes in recent MMA memory when the veteran combat sports competitor walked out of the cage following an illegal headbutt from opponent Donegi Abena.
Schilling, a longtime kickboxer and MMA veteran, faced Abena, another kickboxing background fighter new to professional MMA competition, in a Saturday matchup. The fight scarcely got underway before the dramatic sequence unfolded. Early in the opening round, Abena secured top position and made a critical error by attempting an illegal headbutt. Although the blow appeared not to land cleanly or cause substantial damage, Schilling reacted vocally to the foul, immediately catching the attention of referee Mike Beltran.
What followed was a scene of visible frustration as Schilling rose to his feet, visibly upset and verbally expressing his displeasure with Abena's conduct. Rather than continue fighting, Schilling called for the bout to be stopped and began walking toward the arena exit, apparently unwilling to continue the contest. Despite Schilling's desire to leave, officials ruled the fight in Abena's favor.
The incident stands as one of the strangest conclusions to an MMA bout, where a fighter essentially withdrew rather than continued competing. Such situations remain rare in professional combat sports, where fighters typically attempt to work through adversity or wait for referee intervention. The finish highlights how referee judgment and fighter response to fouls can dramatically alter the course of a match.
