Ex-QB Manziel pummels influencer in MMA debut
Johnny Manziel, the former Heisman Trophy winner and onetime NFL quarterback, made his mixed martial arts debut on Saturday night at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, earning a dominant first-round victory over social media influencer Bob Menery.
Manziel, 33, controlled the matchup from start to finish, showcasing striking and grappling as he landed kicks to Menery's body, executed a takedown, and unleashed hard strikes from mount position. The referee stopped the contest at two minutes and 16 seconds of the opening round, giving Manziel an impressive debut performance.
The fight was hosted by Brand Risk Promotions, an event series organized by Kick streamer Adin Ross that specializes in pitting celebrities and social media personalities against one another in combat sports. The Manziel-Menery matchup had underlying narrative tension stemming from their time together in the Fan Controlled Football league, where Menery held a part-ownership stake and the two reportedly clashed.
Despite the convincing victory, Manziel indicated he has no plans for a lengthy fighting career. When asked about future bouts, he stated the experience was sufficient as a one-time venture. More than a decade removed from his final NFL appearance, the former quarterback's foray into MMA appears to be a brief chapter in his post-football life rather than the beginning of a new athletic pursuit.
