Demetrious Johnson would be ‘shocked’ if Tom Aspinall fights again

Demetrious Johnson has cast serious doubt on Tom Aspinall's ability to return to the UFC Octagon, citing the severity and long-term implications of the heavyweight champion's eye injuries.

Aspinall vacated his UFC heavyweight title after recurring complications from eye damage sustained in training prevented medical clearance to compete. A recent sparring accident further injured his right eye, prompting his decision to step away from the sport. Aspinall had been targeting a rematch and title unification bout against Ciryl Gane.

During a YouTube address, the UFC Hall of Famer explained his skepticism about a comeback. "We don't know if we'll ever see Tom Aspinall again inside the UFC Octagon," Johnson said. "Deep down in my gut, I would say no." Johnson emphasized the permanent nature of the injury, warning that Aspinall could face vision loss for the rest of his life. The flyweight legend stressed that he would not personally accept the risk of further eye damage when training and competing, especially given the possibility of permanent disability.

Johnson acknowledged sending Aspinall a supportive message but expressed concern about the fighter's willingness to gamble with his eyesight. Aspinall, however, has stated publicly that he intends to return once medically cleared, suggesting the final chapter of his UFC career has not yet been written.
