UFC legend Tito Ortiz dealing with memory loss, headaches after recent boating accident
UFC Hall of Famer Tito Ortiz is recovering from a severe boating accident that occurred 11 weeks ago, an incident he has described as "the worst accident of my life." The 51-year-old former UFC light heavyweight champion revealed on social media that he was thrown from his boat and found himself stranded over 100 yards away in the water before the vessel circled back to rescue him.
Ortiz has been battling significant aftereffects from the accident, including persistent headaches, facial and body pain, and substantial memory loss. For nearly two months following the incident, much of his memory was compromised, though he reports that pieces are slowly returning. The injury has had cascading effects across multiple areas of his life—his health, personal relationships, business interests, and professional opportunities have all been impacted.
The Hall of Famer emphasized his gratitude for surviving what could have been fatal. "When I surfaced, the boat was over 100 yards away," Ortiz wrote, reflecting on how close he came to losing his life. He credited divine intervention and expressed his determination to continue fighting through the recovery process.
Looking ahead, Ortiz announced plans to undergo C3-C4 disc replacement surgery on June 8, hoping the procedure will alleviate his chronic pain and accelerate his recovery journey. A pioneer of the UFC during its early years, Ortiz was a dominant light heavyweight champion from 2000 to 2003 and authored memorable rivalries with Chuck Liddell and Ken Shamrock. His last combat sports appearance came in September 2021, when he suffered a knockout loss to Anderson Silva in a boxing match.
