McGregor books July 11 return against Holloway

Conor McGregor is coming back. The former two-weight UFC champion will return to competition for the first time in five years when he faces Max Holloway in a welterweight bout at UFC 329 on July 11 in Las Vegas, UFC CEO Dana White announced Saturday.

McGregor's layoff represents one of the longest stretches of inactivity in his fighting career, stemming from a devastating July 2021 loss to Dustin Poirier that left him with a broken leg. That defeat came at the end of McGregor's first round, when he stepped backward in the final seconds and suffered the gruesome injury that sidelined him for an extended recovery period. Since that loss, McGregor has been largely absent from the sport's landscape, making the announced return one of the most significant comebacks in recent UFC history.

The matchup with Holloway carries historical significance, as it will mark a rematch of the pair's first encounter in August 2013. That original bout took place at featherweight when both fighters were early in their UFC careers, with McGregor earning a three-round decision in Boston despite suffering a torn ACL during the contest. Since then, both fighters have evolved significantly, though Holloway has maintained greater activity and success, while McGregor has become something of a fixture in UFC's heavyweight and welterweight discussions despite his extended absence.

McGregor's return at welterweight rather than his traditional featherweight or lightweight divisions signals a potential shift in his approach. The bout gives the fighting community a chance to assess whether five years away has diminished the sharpness that once made McGregor one of the sport's most dynamic strikers, or whether his technical foundation remains intact as he begins the next chapter of his career.
