Morning Report | Eddie Alvarez questions Conor McGregor’s return: ‘You’re either in this life or you’re not’

Eddie Alvarez has raised concerns about Conor McGregor's chances in his highly anticipated return to the UFC this summer. McGregor will face Max Holloway in the main event of UFC 329 on July 11 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, marking the Irishman's first fight in five years.
Alvarez, a former UFC lightweight champion who has faced McGregor, emphasized that stepping away from professional fighting for such an extended period creates a fundamental disconnect that is extremely difficult to overcome. "You're either in this life or you're not," Alvarez stated on Full Send MMA. "It takes years to become a fighter, and once you get out of that character, it's very difficult to get back into it. You can't just pick it down and put it up whenever you want."
Beyond the layoff itself, Alvarez pointed out that McGregor faces a particularly tough comeback opponent. While McGregor defeated Holloway in their first encounter over a decade ago, both men have evolved significantly since then. Holloway has remained active at the sport's highest level and has established a Hall of Fame resume, consistently fighting elite competition. McGregor, conversely, has been absent from active competition throughout this period.
However, Alvarez did identify one advantage working in McGregor's favor: the matchup stylistically suits his strengths. Holloway, primarily a striker himself, likely won't force McGregor into uncomfortable territory such as wrestling exchanges or ground combat. "Conor almost guaranteed himself a boxing, stand-up fight," Alvarez noted. This striking-focused battle should allow McGregor to lean on the skillset where he remains most dangerous.
While acknowledging McGregor's potential to pull off a comeback, Alvarez remained skeptical, believing the time away and the caliber of opponent make this "too much too soon" for the returning fighter.
