Islam Makhachev scores head kick knockdown, ultimately controls Ian Machado Garry to retain title in UFC 330 main event

Islam Makhachev retained his UFC welterweight title and etched his name into the record books at UFC 330, defeating Ian Machado Garry by unanimous decision with scores of 49–46, 49–46, and 48–47. The victory extended Makhachev's winning streak to 17 consecutive fights, surpassing Anderson Silva's previous UFC record of 16 straight wins.

The main event at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia proved to be a grinding affair. Makhachev established control early, using leg kicks to set up a takedown in the opening round and maintaining top position with relentless pressure and knees. In the second round, Makhachev scored a spectacular head kick that dropped Garry and forced the challenger to weather sustained ground control. Though Garry found his rhythm in the middle rounds, landing body kicks and forcing scrambles on the ground, Makhachev's wrestling and grappling proved decisive. In the fifth and final round, Makhachev secured a back control position late, locking in a body triangle and controlling Garry until the final bell.

Garry, competing in his second career UFC loss, showed no signs of discouragement. The Irishman had won four consecutive bouts entering the title shot and proved competitive throughout, but couldn't overcome Makhachev's suffocating ground game. Makhachev himself acknowledged the challenge, noting that fighters at welterweight pack more power than at lightweight and that submissions are harder to secure, yet his technical superiority in wrestling and grappling remained too much for Garry to overcome.

With his record now 29–1, Makhachev continues to position himself as the sport's elite pound-for-pound fighter. Garry's loss, while painful, doesn't diminish his standing as a legitimate contender, and he figures to remain in the title conversation after regrouping.
