Daniel Rodriguez details sharing prison cell with cartel leader in Mexico
UFC welterweight Daniel Rodriguez recently opened up about his extraordinary experience during an eight-month incarceration in a Tijuana prison following his arrest for crossing the Mexican border with marijuana. Now back competing, Rodriguez (20-5) is scheduled to headline UFC Belgrade against Uros Medic (13-3) on August 1.
Rodriguez recounted his prison ordeal on "The Joe Rogan Experience" podcast, detailing how he initially shared a cell with 20 inmates while being bitten by bedbugs. When word spread that he was a UFC fighter, a guard offered him better accommodations for $7,000. Instead, Rodriguez met a cartel leader who controlled special arrangements within the facility and propositioned him to become cellmates for $3,000—a deal Rodriguez immediately accepted.
The cartel boss provided luxury prison accommodations including televisions, a PlayStation, and fresh Nike tracksuits. Rodriguez noted the gang leader would walk with him in the yard, creating the impression they had mutual protection and respect. "I really trusted him; that's one hard thing to do in jail," Rodriguez explained. The cartel head was serving time with his gang for impersonating government officials and raiding drug houses. Remarkably, the leader had boxing experience and assisted Rodriguez's training by arranging gloves and holding mitts, allowing the UFC fighter to maintain his conditioning during incarceration. Rodriguez's resilience and ability to adapt to extraordinary circumstances have enabled his return to competition following his release.
