Arman Tsarukyan: Ilia Topuria lacked proper focus ahead of UFC White House
Lightweight contender Arman Tsarukyan believes Ilia Topuria's lopsided defeat to Justin Gaethje at UFC White House stemmed from overconfidence and misplaced priorities during fight preparation rather than Gaethje's superiority as a competitor.
Topuria entered the bout as a heavy favorite, exuding remarkable confidence bordering on arrogance. The previously undefeated Georgian-Spaniard claimed to possess a video detailing exactly how he would knockout Gaethje in the opening round, planned to release it after his predicted victory, and even threw a celebration party the night before the fight. Topuria had updated his Instagram biography to reflect an 18-0 record in anticipation of the win. Gaethje had publicly warned that Topuria would be forced to retract his boasts if the fight extended beyond round one. Speaking on "The Ariel Helwani Show," Tsarukyan suggested the loss would prove instructive for the champion. "I think this loss is going to teach him a lot of lessons — not to be overconfident and to respect your opponent," Tsarukyan said. "I think he was more focused on his media stuff more than training camp." Topuria's record now stands at 17-1 following the fourth-round stoppage loss.
