In Round 1, Nurmagomedov controlled portions of the action, securing a takedown and landing combinations on the feet, with most observers scoring the round for the favorite. The tide shifted dramatically in Round 2 when a headbutt between the fighters opened a deep cut above Song's right eye. As Nurmagomedov dropped his level searching for another takedown, Song unleashed a perfectly timed right hook that caught him clean, sending Nurmagomedov crashing to the canvas. The knockout came at 1:48 of Round 2, ending the fight before follow-up strikes were even needed. Post-fight, Song called for a title shot and declared his ambition to become the first male Chinese UFC champion.
