Why Islam Makhachev prefers fighting undefeated contender over Ian Garry
Islam Makhachev would rather defend his UFC welterweight title against undefeated contender Michael Morales than face Ian Garry, citing legacy considerations in deciding his next opponent.
The 28-1 champion is slated to make his next title defense in August, though the UFC had not formally announced an opponent as of mid-June. Garry, who holds a 17-1 record, has been considered the frontrunner for the bout after his recent victory over Belal Muhammad. However, Makhachev explained to Red Corner MMA that Morales' undefeated status makes him the more appealing matchup from a career-building perspective.
"If we pick between Morales and Ian, to be honest with you, in terms of my legacy, I would go with Morales," Makhachev said. "Why? Because he's still undefeated. If I beat Ian Garry, some will say, 'Shavkat beat him too a few fights ago.'" The champion acknowledged both men as legitimate contenders but expressed skepticism about their ability to compete with Kamaru Usman, a former title challenger many had dismissed from the conversation.
Moreover, an undefeated victory carries particular weight in combat sports; defeating a fighter with a pristine record adds greater prestige than beating someone with losses already on their record, even if both are ranked contenders. Morales earned his spot in the title picture by knockout over Sean Brady at UFC 322 in November, while Garry established himself a week later. Carlos Prates has also positioned himself in title contention with recent knockout wins over Leon Edwards and Jack Della Maddalena, though Prates believes Garry has already secured the next shot.
